Mitsubishi gets caught up in a fuel economy scandal of their own with mini-cars in Japan

Fuel economy and emissions are some of the biggest challenges for the auto industry – so much so that now the Japanese federals are cracking down on Mitsubishi for falsifying fuel consumption data.

In an official investigation launched by Mitsubishi itself, Nissan Motors Corporation stumbled into violations with some fuel economy estimates for some Mitsubishi Kei mini-cars in some comparative tests. Mitsubishi seems to be supplying Nissan with several Kei cars to “reconnect” and sell them as such.

Nissan brought this to Mitsubishi, who then found out about optimistic fuel consumption figures, and during its own investigation, Mitsubishi found that the tests were not performed properly during certification of fuel economy ratings.

They also found that about 625,000 vehicles were damaged and vehicles were delivered since June 2013.

Mitsubishi promised his statement to fix the problem with all the victims.
